Position in a sentence: "Tuy nhiên" is most commonly used at the beginning of a sentence, followed by a comma. It can also be placed after the subject for slight emphasis.

Formal vs. Informal: "Tuy nhiên" is considered more formal than "nhưng" (but). It is prevalent in written language, academic papers, reports, and formal speeches.
Nhưng (conj): but. A simpler, more common conjunction used to connect two contrasting clauses within a single sentence.

Thế nhưng (conj): but, however. Similar to "tuy nhiên" but can feel slightly more conversational.

Song (conj): but, however. A literary and formal synonym, less common in everyday speech.

- Nevertheless: In spite of that; notwithstanding.

Contrast with "nhưng": While "nhưng" is a coordinating conjunction that links two clauses within a sentence, "tuy nhiên" is a conjunctive adverb that typically links two separate sentences or independent ideas. They are often interchangeable with slight stylistic adjustments.
- Correct with "nhưng": Trời lạnh, nhưng tôi vẫn đi bơi. (It's cold, but I still go swimming.)
- Correct with "tuy nhiên": Trời rất lạnh. Tuy nhiên, tôi vẫn đi bơi. (It is very cold. However, I still go swimming.)
Punctuation: When "tuy nhiên" starts a sentence, it is almost always followed by a comma.
